This position sits jointly within the China management team locally and also the Global Public Policy Unit, part of the Legal and Policy Department. The purpose of the role is to lead and shape our approach to government and regulatory affairs and institutional relations across greater China. This is a new role and as such, the successful candidate will need to work closely with the Managing Director, China and their senior team as well as key global HQ stakeholders. They will also play a key role in helping us manage our relationships with China Government stakeholders. The postholder will advise on and implement an approach that ensures we have the knowledge, infrastructure and relationships to be able to proactively and effectively manage our business within the evolving China political and regulatory landscape, with a particular focus on our key areas of Media, Technology and Consumer markets.

This is a critical role for our business at a time of significant change, both for our business and in the wider geopolitical and macroeconomic arena. As such, there is an opportunity for the candidate to make a real difference and be influential in the success and development of our business in greater China.

To be successful, the candidate must be proactive, well connected, aware of how to combine political insight with business objectives, inquisitive, enthusiastic about international affairs and public policy, enjoy being continually challenged, and demonstrate sound judgement even in ambiguous situations.

Requirements

The successful candidate must have a deep understanding of Chinese politics and governance, be inquisitive, enthusiastic about government affairs and public policy, and demonstrate sound judgement even in ambiguous situations.

• Experience in working for an international company with a China presence ideally in the Media, Entertainment, Consumer or Technology sectors. Experience working within a government or public affairs consultancy is also beneficial.
• Exceptional research skills, including ability to find new sources of information (e.g., data points) to support policy positions;
• Exceptional writing skills, including ability to synthesize policy documents and complex issues for internal and external stakeholders and ability to convince through writing;
• Strong analytical skills, including ability to dive deep on regulations by understanding how legislative and regulatory proposals may impact the company's business, ability to identify weaknesses in policy documents and propose solutions;
• Comfortable working in matrix environments; self-starter who can use good judgment, with resourcefulness to take action in the absence of clear guidance; ability to “manage up” to ensure you get what you need to be effective;
• Ability to design, propose and implement systems and processes to support a world-class public policy team, including internal tools and coordination systems;
• Exceptional time-management skills; including ability to prioritize and manage competing demands on your time;
• Proven ability to work in international teams, coordinating across functions and across different jurisdictions and carefully managing both direct and dotted line reporting relationships
• Maintain highest personal levels of ethical conduct, confidentiality and integrity;
• A undergraduate degree is required, preferably in a relevant discipline (Law, Political Science, Economics, etc.); and
• Ability to speak and write excellent English, complemented by excellent Mandarin.

Preferred Qualifications

• Good knowledge of internet business related issues, including e-commerce, cyber security, data and privacy protection, over-the-top policy, artificial intelligence, competition and consumer protection, climate change and resilience, China foreign relations (in particular US);
• Previous role in a public policy or related team so as to bring best practices in team management and coordination to our function;
